How NZ Crime Podcasts Impact Real Investigations

Crime documents

The influence of NZ crime podcasts on real-life investigations is an increasingly noteworthy aspect of modern criminal justice. As these podcasts gain popularity, they often play a pivotal role in shaping public perception and even impacting legal proceedings.

Impact on Investigations

The influence of NZ crime podcasts on real-life investigations is profound, with several key aspects driving their impact:

  • Reopening Cases: Podcasts like “Gone Fishing” have directly influenced the reopening of cold cases by bringing new information and public interest to light. The increased visibility and scrutiny brought by these podcasts can prompt law enforcement agencies to re-examine old evidence and pursue new leads. For instance, in the case of the disappearance of a young woman, new witnesses came forward after hearing about the case on the podcast, leading to a breakthrough in the investigation.
  • Public Engagement: By engaging a wide audience, these podcasts generate community-driven support and sometimes lead to tips that can assist law enforcement. Listeners who become invested in the cases discussed may offer valuable information or insights that authorities had not previously considered. In one notable case, a listener recognized a suspect’s description from a podcast episode and contacted the authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
  • Awareness and Education: NZ crime podcasts raise awareness about lesser-known cases and educate the public on the intricacies of criminal investigations and legal processes. Through detailed storytelling and analysis, these podcasts provide listeners with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. As a result, the public becomes more informed about the complexities of solving crimes, leading to greater cooperation and support for law enforcement efforts.

Real-Life Examples

The impact of NZ crime podcasts on investigations becomes evident when examining real-life cases and their outcomes:

  • The Crewe Murders Revisited: After episodes covering the unsolved Crewe murders aired, new discussions and theories emerged in the public domain, prompting renewed interest and scrutiny into the decades-old case. The increased attention generated by the podcast led to fresh perspectives on the evidence and potential suspects. As a result, law enforcement agencies reopened the case and made significant progress in solving it.
  • Advocacy and Reform: NZ crime podcasts also serve as platforms for advocacy, highlighting flaws in the criminal justice system and pushing for reforms based on the cases they cover. By shedding light on issues such as wrongful convictions or systemic biases, these podcasts contribute to ongoing discussions about justice and accountability. For example, a podcast episode discussing racial disparities in sentencing led to public outrage and calls for reforms to address systemic injustices within the legal system.

Engagement with Law Enforcement

Collaboration between NZ crime podcasts and law enforcement agencies is crucial for responsible and effective investigative reporting:

  • Collaborative Approaches: Some podcast producers work directly with law enforcement to ensure that their content is informative and respectful to ongoing investigations. By consulting with authorities and respecting legal boundaries, these podcasts can provide valuable insights without compromising the integrity of active cases. Law enforcement agencies benefit from the additional exposure and public awareness generated by these collaborations, which can lead to new leads and breakthroughs in investigations.
  • Ethical Considerations: Responsible podcasting involves balancing public engagement with the integrity of ongoing legal processes, ensuring that the podcasts do not compromise active investigations. Podcast producers must navigate ethical considerations to avoid sensationalizing or exploiting sensitive cases for entertainment purposes. By maintaining transparency and adhering to journalistic standards, NZ crime podcasts can uphold their credibility and contribute positively to the criminal justice system.

Conclusion

Whether you’re a seasoned listener or new to the scene, the world of NZ crime podcasts offers a treasure trove of fascinating and thought-provoking content. SENZ is a young, 24-hour sports radio network serving a country with a population roughly a tenth the size of Shanghai. That may sound silly, but this is no ordinary country – it is, by its own admission, a sports-crazy New Zealand. SEN- Sports Entertainment Network New Zealand is the local extension of Australia’s SEN brand and provides live sports broadcasts, racing and sports talk to an enthusiastic target audience of men aged 25-54.

SENZ’s launch date was not ideal. The network launched on April 19, 2021, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, with few live sporting events; those that did occur were without crowds. Hardly conducive to a compelling sound. At the time, the network was operating out of New Zealand’s former Stanley Street Trackside Radio studios for racing, which offered coverage and commentary on horse and dog racing. SENZ was keen to develop its own brand and identified space in the trendy, historic Saatchi and Saatchi Building in nearby Parnell to build dedicated studios. The push to create a new network was driven by a sense of urgency: the studios’ leases were about to expire; time was of the essence.

Essentially, everything had to be bigger – multiple channel inputs and outputs, more console channels… whatever.

SENZ received all the equipment. As Pearson and the SEN team were stuck in Australia due to COVID-related travel restrictions in New Zealand, New Zealand teams had to oversee the on-site installation and the seamless transition of broadcasting to the new studios.

Simplicity and adaptability were the hallmarks of the build approach. “Keeping things simple makes everything easy to work with; it also means there are fewer things in the way that can go wrong,” said Bacon. An example was the setup of live audio streams. SENZ uses established channels instead of physically laying cables at multiple sporting events. For those events where SENZ has on-field commentary, its primary technology is Tieline.

Tailoring the equipment to their needs was critical – another reason they chose Wheatstone, especially the ability to use scripting to develop better workflows on the WheatNet-IP network. For example, SENZ created button scripts on the SS-8 OLED control panel to map microphones to incoming remote channels. Each microphone is automatically linked to the right mix-minus or bus-minus, whether it’s an announcer on the field or a commentator in the studio next door.

Mai FM is New Zealand’s largest urban contemporary radio network that promotes Māori language and culture and broadcasts hip-hop and rhythm and blues. It is based in Auckland and is available in ten markets across the country. The network targets people between the ages of 15 and 34 and reaches approximately 382,300 different listeners each week.

History

Mai FM began broadcasting in Auckland in July 1992. The first breakfast host was Robert Rakete, now a presenter on The Breeze. It was run by one of the largest Maori tribes in New Zealand, Ngati Whātua and Mai Media. Between 1996 and 2005, Mai FM also operated a second station, Ruia Mai, at 1179am in Auckland with all programming in Māori.

From 1996 to 2001, Mai FM could be heard in Christchurch on 90.5 FM through an agreement between Ngāti Whātua and Kāi Tahu iwi. The Christchurch station was originally called 90.5 Tahu FM, with local radio programming and formatted to Mai FM Auckland music. In late 2001, the joint agreement ended and the Mai FM branding of the Christchurch station ceased, reverting to its original name of Tahu FM. In 1996, Ngāti Watwoa also entered into an agreement with Te Arawa iwi to broadcast Mai FM in Rotorua on 96.7 FM, which over the years changed to 99.1 and is now broadcast on 105.5.

On February 29, 2008, it was announced that MediaWorks New Zealand had bought the station and would take over on March 31, 2008. Following the MediaWorks takeover, there were significant changes in programming and branding, and the Mai FM network was created.

The Mai Hot 1000 The Mai Hot 1000 is one of the station’s annual countdown functions. The order of the chart, including artists and songs, is voted on by listeners on the station’s official website. The countdown continues daily for three weeks, which began in 2013 as The Mai Hot 500 according to their official Instagram page. In 2014, it was renamed The Mai Hot 900 and expanded to 300 songs in 2020. Then in 2022, 200 songs were removed from it due to the launch of The Mai Hip Hop 100 and The Mai RnB 100 Countdowns.

Pirate station Radio Hawraki has transmitted its first scheduled transmission beyond New Zealand’s 3-mile territorial limit. The MV Tiri was anchored in the Colville Channel between the Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Peninsula.

The brainchild of journalist David Gapes, Hauraki challenged the monopoly of the conservative New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, whose programs had little appeal to 1960s teenagers. When attempts to obtain a private broadcasting license failed, Hauraki decided to broadcast from offshore.

Test broadcasts from Tiri began in earnest on December 1. The first song played three days later was the somewhat symbolic “Born Free” by Matt Monroe.

Over the next 3.5 years, legal challenges and incidents at sea tested the participants’ resolve. In January 1968, the Tiri collided with rocks on the Great Barrier Island. The replacement ship Kapuni (called Tiri II) also ran aground.

In March 1970, the Broadcasting Authority granted Radio Hauraki a license for the territory of Auckland. The last pirate broadcast of Hauraki was made on June 1, 1970. “Born Free closed the program. Hauraki’s triumph was tinged with tragedy when announcer Rick Grant was lost overboard on the flight back to Auckland that evening.
